9001 2000 - The New Version
Since the early
days of BS 5750 introduction, it has been recognised that the original
standard was designed to provide the manufacturing industry with
the requirements for introducing the Quality Assurance of Quality
Control.
In addition
to the manufacturing industry; BS 5750: 1987, ISO 9001:1994 and
ISO 9002: 1994 have been used within the UK over the past few years
extensively to introduce Quality Assurance Systems to the service
sector. Whilst many experts would tell you otherwise, this introduction
to the services sector was always a "poor fit" and was
introduced due to external commercial pressures with a mix of management
anxiety and Quality Manager stress....usually resulting in complexity!
The introduction of BS 5750 to the service sector provided, in many
cases, very little in the way of financial benefits to the organisation.
It is in recognition
of the frequent lack of benefits, that both ISO 9002: 1994 and ISO
9003: 1994 will be withdrawn when ISO 9001: 2000 is issued.
The new ISO
9001: 2000 encompasses the best of both performance improvement
and compliance to legal and contractual obligations.
Business managers
in all sectors can be reassured, that the new ISO 9001: 2000:
- Is less
complicated, providing compliance with performance measures.
- Is more
practical and process based.
- Provides
a method for measuring performance.
- Provides
an excellent model for a fully Integrated Management System.
- Replaces
ISO 9002: 1994 and ISO 9003: 1994.
- Is ideal
for both manufacturing and service sector business.
